Liu Fei
Liu Fei (born 1964 in Nanjing) examines with his uniformed. bald-headed young women the interplay of adaptability and individual expression. Her clothes and shaved heads seem like a like-minded one, but her provocative gestures and exaggerated facial expressions betray the desire to break out of this isomorphic world. The laughing red mouths, which stand out in shades of grey, seem to mock the traditional virtues of Chinese women such as innocence, tenderness and elegance.
By dressing his protagonists in the uniforms of the 1920s students known for their progressivity, Liu Fei builds a bridge between rebellion and emancipation at that time and today. At the same time, he often finds the templates for his motifs in fashion magazines and thus reflects the influence of fashion on society, from which it cannot escape despite accelerated individualization.
