Zhang Tingqun’s work depicts Chinese shells made from urban constructions, making the whole city look like a bonsai. In fact, every metropolis in China, whether shaped by European style or traditional architecture, looks like a giant potted plant. This is Zhang’s true sensibility. Zhang compresses the huge metropolises and their constructions to human size by planting them in a pot and making them look like a bonsai.
